The Mahadev Online Book App is a betting app that has been under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for alleged money laundering and other financial crimes. The ED has summoned several Bollywood celebrities, including Ranbir Kapoor, Sonu Sood, Sonakshi Sinha, and Sunny Leone, for questioning in connection with the case.
It is alleged that these celebrities promoted the app on social media and in other ways, and that they received payments for doing so. The ED is investigating whether these payments were made through legal channels or whether they were part of a money laundering scheme.
The celebrities involved have denied any wrongdoing. They have said that they were not aware of the illegal activities associated with the app, and that they simply agreed to promote it because they were offered money.
The ED investigation is ongoing, and it is not yet clear what charges, if any, will be filed against the celebrities involved. However, the case has raised concerns about the relationship between Bollywood and the gambling industry.
Ranbir Kapoor, a Bollywood actor who starred in advertisements for the Mahadev Online Book App, was called in by the Enforcement Directorate for questioning, which made news last week. Then, ED also called in for questioning Shraddha Kapoor, Kapil Sharma, Huma Qureshi, and Heena Khan.
The summons was issued roughly 19 days after the anti-money laundering agency disclosed that a number of Bollywood celebrities, including actors, singers, and dancers, visited Saurabh Chandrakar, the proprietor of the Mahadev Betting App who is accused of being involved in a scam, and his 200-crore wedding event. In February 2023, the wedding took place in the UAE.
ED claimed that the actor was given a large amount of money in exchange for the promotions, which was from the proceeds of the crime. The celebrities attending the wedding of the scam-accused Saurabh Chandrakarincluded Atif Aslam, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Ali Asgar, Vishal Dadlani, Tiger Shroff, Elli AvrRam, Bharti Singh, Sunny Leone, Bhagyashree, Kriti Kharbanda, Neha Kakkar, Nushrratt Bharuccha and Krushna Abhishek.
This information was uncovered during ED’s probe in the scam worth hundreds of crores in which Saurabh Chandrakar and Ravi Uppal are key accused. These two accused are the owners of the Mahadev Online Book Betting application which is an umbrella syndicate arranging online platforms for allegedly enabling illegal betting websites.
Gold bars, jewellery, and cash amounting to a total of Rs 417 crore is what the Enforcement Directorate recovered last month when they conducted searches at 39 locations spanning Raipur, Bhopal, Mumbai, and Kolkata linked to the Mahadev betting app.
